“Reiki” is a Japanese word. “Rei” means “sacred”, and “ki” means “universal energy.” It refers to the unifying energy associated with all life. A Reiki practitioner acts as an effective channel for “ki”, and activates a flow of energy from the environment to the person being treated. Reiki is a gentle holistic healing practice that treats at all levels – physical, mental/emotional, subtle and causal – and will safely complement other healing modalities.
The “laying on of hands” to treat illness and injury is a natural part of our care of self and others. We automatically place our hands on a part of your body that is not well or injured. When we have a headache we put our hands to our head and face; when we have a stomach ache we hold this area; we cover wounds with our hands; in times of emotion we put our hands to our heart. We may reach out to touch an area of tightness or pain in someone else, or to comfort them by putting a hand on their shoulder or back. This natural response invites a healing flow of energy to the area of contact. Reiki is an extension of this very natural healing ability that we all have.
All living beings are energy beings. On a physical level our physiology is made up of chemical reactions and electrical signals. Our breath activates the life energy of the body and can cleanse our thoughts and emotions. On a subtle level we respond to the magnetic field of the earth and the various energies of other beings around us. We co-participate with the universe in the generation of an energy field and our sense organs and psyche are sensitive to other energy fields around us. At our highest an deepest connections we are all connected ever present awareness and the evolving energy forms of life on earth.
